چکیده

A series of new liquid crystalline dimesogenic compounds with chiral tails was synthesized, and their thermal and liquid crystalline properties were studied. The chain length of the central polymethylene spacers (x) was varied from dimethylene (2) to decamethylene (12). These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and cross-polarizing microscopy. All compounds were found to be enantiotropically liquid crystalline, and the values of melting (Tm) and isotropization temperature (Ti) as well as enthalpy change (∆Hi) and entropy change for isotropization (∆Si) decreased in a zig-zag fashion revealing the so-called odd-even effect as x increases. Their mesomorphic properties fall into three categories depending upon x; (a) compounds with x=2 and 4 formed two different mesophases, smectic and cholesteric phases in that order on heating, and vice versa on cooling, (b) compounds with x=3, 7, 8, 10 and 11 reversibly formed only the cholesteric phase, and (c) compounds with x=5, 6, 9 and 12 exhibited only a cholesteric phase on heating, whereas on cooling they formed two different mesophases, cholesteric and smectic phases, sequentially.

Review of Crystalline Structures of Some Selected Homologous Series of Rod-Like Molecules Capable of Forming Liquid Crystalline Phases

The crystal structures of four homologous series of rod-like molecules are reviewed, two of which form hydrogen bonds and two with a symmetric chemical constitution. Many of the compounds investigated turn into liquid crystalline phases upon temperature increase. It is of valuable interest to know possible conformations and possible packing arrangements as prerequisites to model liquid crystall...

Synthesis and Characterization of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystalline Organosiloxanes Containing 4-(4-undecanyloxy bi-phenyl-1-carboxyloxy)phenyl (2S,3S)-2-chloro-3-methylvalerate and 4-(4-undecanyloxybenzoyloxy)biphenyl (2S,3S)-2-chloro-3-methylvalerate

A series of new organosiloxane ferroelectric liquid crystalline (FLC) materials have been synthesized, and their mesomorphic and physical properties have been characterized. Four new disiloxanes and trisiloxanes, containing biphenyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and phenyl 4-hydroxybiphenylcarboxylate as mesogenic units and eleven methylene unit as spacers and (2S,3S)-2-chloro-3-methylvalerate unit as chir...

Ferroelectric liquid crystalline polyoxetanes bearing chiral dimesogenic pendants

Two new polyoxetanes bearing dimesogenic pendants were prepared and their liquid crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The dimesogens consist of cholesterol and biphenyl moieties connected through polymethylene spacers. Their biphenyl ends were attached to the oxetane monomer through a hexamethylene unit ...

Copolymers of 2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl) oxycarbonyl]styrene with styrene and methyl methacrylate: Synthesis, monomer reactivity ratios, thermal properties, and liquid crystalline behavior

Copolymers of a liquid crystalline monomer, 2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene (MPCS), with St and MMA were prepared by free radical polymerization at low conversion in chlorobenzene with 2,20-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The copolymers of poly(MPCS-co-St) and poly(MPCS-co-MMA) were characterized by H NMR and GPC. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined by using t...

Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of 2,5-bis[(4-hexyloxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene

A side-on liquid crystalline monomer, 2,5-bis[(4-hexyloxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene) (HPCS), was successfully polymerized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The polymerization was catalyzed by CuBr/PMDETA in chlorobenzene at 90°C with (1-bromoethyl)benzene as the initiator. The polymers have narrow MWD. It is the second example of mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP...
